Summer to Fall Decorating Ideas: How to Transition Your Home Between Seasons

There's always that time of year when summer is winding down, but it doesn't quite feel like fall just yet. You're ready for a change around the house, but maybe you're not quite ready to bring out the pumpkins, autumn leaves, and all the traditional fall decorations.
This is one of my favorite times to refresh my home!
I love creating a cozy, welcoming atmosphere with beautiful textures, soft lighting, and a timeless color palette that works beautifully between the seasons.
Today, I'm sharing how I transition my home from summer to fall, starting in the bedroom with beautiful bedding and cozy essentials from Quince, then moving into the living room to incorporate layered textures, decorative accessories, and subtle seasonal touches.
The best part is that you don't need to completely redecorate your home to make it feel ready for a new season.

How to Decorate Between Summer and Fall
Decorating between seasons is really about making small changes that gradually shift the atmosphere of your home.
Instead of immediately replacing all your summer decor with traditional autumn decorations, I like to focus on the foundation of each room.
Think beautiful neutral colors, soft bedding, cozy throw blankets, textured pillows, and decorative accessories that can easily transition into your full fall decorating later.
This approach allows you to enjoy the changing seasons without feeling like you have to decorate your entire house overnight.
1. Start With a Cozy Bedroom Refresh
One of the easiest ways to transition your home from summer to fall is by updating your bedding.
During the warmer months, I tend to gravitate toward lighter fabrics and an airy feeling in the bedroom. As the seasons begin to change, I love introducing a little more texture and warmth.
For this bedroom refresh, I incorporated beautiful bedding and cozy home essentials from Quince.
The goal wasn't to create a fall-themed bedroom, but rather a comfortable, inviting space that would feel beautiful throughout the changing seasons.
Layer Your Bedding for a Cozy Look
Layering is one of my favorite decorating techniques because it creates dimension without requiring lots of additional decorations.
A few simple ways to create a beautifully layered bed include:
Start with comfortable, quality bedding in a versatile color.
Add a duvet or comforter that complements your existing bedroom decor.
Incorporate decorative pillows for texture and dimension.
Drape a throw blanket across the foot of the bed for an inviting finishing touch.
Mix different fabrics and textures while keeping the colors cohesive.
I especially love using neutral bedding because it creates a beautiful foundation that can be updated with seasonal accessories throughout the year.
And when you invest in pieces you truly love, you can enjoy them well beyond one season.
2. Choose a Timeless Summer to Fall Color Palette
You don't have to decorate with orange pumpkins and autumn leaves to make your home feel ready for fall.
One of my favorite approaches to transitional decorating is to introduce warmer tones gradually.
For this refresh, I focused on a timeless neutral color palette that would complement my existing furniture and decor.
Some of my favorite colors for transitioning between summer and fall include:
Warm ivory and creamy white
Soft beige and natural linen
Taupe and warm brown
Muted burgundy and deeper accent colors
Subtle terracotta and earthy tones
These colors work beautifully with traditional home decor and can create a cozy atmosphere without making your home feel overly seasonal.
I also love that this type of color palette gives you flexibility. When you're ready to begin decorating for fall, you already have a beautiful foundation to build upon.
3. Add Cozy Throw Blankets and Decorative Pillows
One of the simplest ways to refresh your living room is by changing your throw pillows and blankets.
You don't necessarily need new furniture, artwork, or large decorative pieces. Sometimes a few well-chosen textiles can completely change the feeling of a room.
For my living room, I incorporated pieces from the Studio McGee collection, along with decorative pillow covers that complement my existing furniture.
I love how pillows and throws add warmth, texture, and personality to a space.
My Tips for Styling Pillows and Throws
Mix textures. Combining different fabrics helps create depth and visual interest, even when you're working with a neutral color palette.
Use different sizes. Layering larger pillows behind smaller accent pillows creates a fuller, more inviting arrangement.
Repeat colors. Bringing the same accent colors into different areas of the room helps everything feel connected.
Keep comfort in mind. A beautiful living room should still be a space where you can sit down, relax, and enjoy your home.

4. Refresh Your Living Room With a Beautiful Area Rug
An area rug can make such a difference in how a room looks and feels.
It helps define your seating area, adds softness underfoot, and brings together the colors and textures throughout the space.
When transitioning from summer to fall, consider choosing a rug with a warm or neutral color palette that complements your existing furniture.
I featured two washable living room rug options in this decorating project, including a beautiful orange-toned rug and a versatile white rug.
The warmer option can introduce a subtle autumn feeling, while the lighter option provides a timeless foundation that works throughout the year.

When choosing a rug, I always recommend considering the size of your room, the placement of your furniture, and how the rug will complement the other colors in your space.
5. Decorate With Accessories You Can Use Year-Round
Another wonderful way to transition between seasons is by incorporating decorative accessories that aren't tied to a particular holiday.
I love using beautiful vases, bowls, books, and other decorative accents because they can be styled differently throughout the year.
For this project, I included a large white vase and a smaller burgundy vase.
The white vase is a wonderful example of a versatile decorating piece that can complement almost any seasonal color palette.

The burgundy vase introduces a deeper accent color that feels especially beautiful as we move toward autumn.
You can also update the look of a vase throughout the seasons by changing the stems, greenery, or florals you display inside it.

6. Use Soft Lighting to Create a Warm, Inviting Atmosphere
Lighting is one of those decorating details that can completely change the atmosphere of a room.
As summer begins to transition into fall and the evenings gradually become shorter, I love incorporating softer, warmer lighting throughout my home.
Table lamps, accent lighting, and candles can all help create that comfortable, welcoming feeling.
You don't need to change every light fixture in your home. Sometimes simply turning off the overhead lights and using a few table lamps makes a room feel so much more inviting.
This is especially beautiful in bedrooms and living rooms, where you want to create a relaxing atmosphere at the end of the day.
7. Add Subtle Seasonal Accents Before Full Fall Decorating
One of the questions I often hear is how to decorate when you're ready for fall but it's still technically summer.
My favorite solution is to start with subtle changes rather than bringing out every seasonal decoration at once.
A few ideas include:
Replacing lightweight summer throws with cozier textures
Incorporating warmer accent colors through pillows and accessories
Adding natural greenery or muted floral arrangements
Styling decorative vases with branches or seasonal stems
Creating a softer atmosphere with warm lighting
Updating your bedding with comfortable layers
These simple changes help your home transition naturally from one season to the next.
And when you're finally ready to bring out the pumpkins, fall wreaths, and autumn decorations, much of your foundation is already in place!
My Favorite Summer to Fall Decorating Tips
If you're planning to refresh your home between seasons, here are a few things to remember.
You don't have to decorate everything at once. Start with one room and make a few changes that have the biggest impact.
Focus on texture before seasonal decorations. Bedding, pillows, throws, and rugs can make your home feel cozy without relying on traditional fall accessories.
Choose versatile pieces. Invest in home essentials and decorative accessories that can work throughout multiple seasons.
Work with what you already own. Sometimes rearranging furniture or restyling your favorite pieces is all you need.
Decorate at your own pace. There's no rule that says your home has to be fully decorated for fall by a certain date.
Creating a Home You Love Between Seasons
I think one of the most enjoyable parts of seasonal decorating is watching your home gradually change throughout the year.
You don't always need a dramatic transformation to make a space feel beautiful and inviting.
Sometimes it's as simple as refreshing your bedding, adding a few cozy pillows, or incorporating a warmer color palette into your favorite room.
I hope these summer to fall decorating ideas give you a little inspiration for creating a home that feels comfortable, welcoming, and beautiful during those weeks between the seasons.
Thank you so much for spending a little time with me today!
